The Narrenturm is an important monument to the history of healthcare and medicine in the late 18th century. The striking round tower was built specifically for the care of mentally ill people.
The Narrenturm was founded in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II and was the first institution in Europe dedicated exclusively to the treatment of the mentally ill. The listed building houses around 45,000 objects, the world's largest collection of pathological specimens.
The exhibition can be viewed independently. Access is barrier-free. Please note that the exhibits are human specimens. Recommended for ages 14 and up. Photography and filming are not permitted in the exhibition and study collection.
