The Hofburg Innsbruck represents a significant part of the architectural heritage of the Republic of Austria. Located in the heart of the Tyrolean capital, it has seen the rise and fall of many rulers, with Maximilian, Maria Theresa, and Sisi having a particularly significant influence.
Emperor Maximilian I expanded the Hofburg built by his predecessor and commissioned the construction of the Coat of Arms Tower and the Golden Hall. The Harnaschhaus was a further addition to the Hofburg, which today houses the convent founded by Maria Theresa. Between 1750 and 1770, the Hofburg Innsbruck was remodeled into a Baroque complex, before the Empress Elisabeth Apartment, still faithfully preserved today, was created in the 19th century.
To mark the Maximilian Year 2019, the Austrian Burghauptmannschaft (Castle Administration) established the permanent exhibition "Maximilian1," a modern exhibition featuring a digital educational concept, dedicated to the personality of Emperor Maximilian I and his era. Every two years, a special exhibition is presented, focusing on a specific area of the emperor's life and his era. The current special exhibition, "Maximilian1 - Imperial Vision and Urban Flowering of Innsbruck," explores the city's development from the early modern period to the 18th century. It shows how Emperor Maximilian I elevated Innsbruck to a royal residence and how Maria Theresa shaped the baroque royal residence. More than 100 exhibits, including an original relief stone of the Golden Roof, a facsimile of Albrecht Dürer's "Innsbruck from the North," and 19th-century panoramic lithographs, bring these changes to life. A digital 3D city model also illustrates Innsbruck's architectural and topographical development. The special exhibition will be on display at the Hofburg Innsbruck from September 12, 2025, to February 15, 2026.
