Museum Lower Austria

A journey through the history and nature of Lower Austria

Located in the heart of St. Pölten's cultural district, the Lower Austria Museum combines nature and history in a modern way. The House of Nature displays over 40 living native animal species in aquariums, terrariums, and a formicarium—including the green lizard, tree frog, catfish, and, more recently, two impressive sturgeon, the world's largest freshwater fish. The House of History explores important themes in Lower Austria's history within a Central European context. Interactive stations, narrated animal feedings, and a natural museum garden make a visit a year-round experience. The Edison restaurant, located directly within the museum, provides enjoyable breaks.

Our exhibitions

Animals of the Night (until February 27, 2027)
While people either rest or celebrate at night, many animals and plants are particularly active during the dark hours. They emerge from their hiding places, begin to feed, swarm, emit scents, and reproduce. Which animals take advantage of these opportunities offered by the night? How have they adapted to the darkness? What abilities do they possess?

Children of War – Growing Up Between 1938 and 1955 (until January 17, 2027)
The exhibition focuses on eyewitnesses and their personal mementos. It reveals the diverse realities of life during that era: It explores the lives of children from victim families as well as children from perpetrator families. It examines children from rural areas and cities, from different social backgrounds and origins. Childhood during this time was characterized by uncertainty and hardship, but after 1945, it also marked the first signs of a new beginning.

City + Countryside = 40. A Journey Through Time in Twelve Stations (May 20 to November 1, 2026)
In 1986, St. Pölten became the capital of Lower Austria by popular vote. At ten central locations throughout the city, the outdoor exhibition shows how the city and surrounding countryside have changed over the past four decades. Contemporary photographs illustrate this transformation. The exhibition begins and ends at the Museum of Lower Austria and the St. Pölten City Museum.
