Medieval festival in Eggenburg

The historical town of Eggenburg will once again play host to jugglers, knights and acrobats on 9th and 10th September 2023.

The festival will turn back the wheel of time and the audience will be transported into the world of the Middle Ages. More than 200 artists will captivate the audience, and there will be more than 150 market stalls where visitors can marvel at historical handicrafts and enjoy culinary delights. This year, the theme of the festival is science in the Middle Ages.

The programme includes more than 150 events for guests to enjoy, ranging from medieval music to historical handicrafts, fascinating lectures to street performances by jugglers and even staged fights. Modern traffic signs are carefully hidden behind heraldic plaques, while wooden crates and straw decorations make the festival as atmospheric as possible within the medieval city walls of Eggenburg.

A hit with the public in 2022
More than 30,000 visitors attended the comeback festival in 2022. At last year’s event, the journey through time to medieval Eggenburg seamlessly picked up where it (involuntarily) left off in 2019. Eggenburg can still claim to host the largest and most successful medieval festival anywhere in Austria.

The Programme for 2023: Science in the Middle Ages
This year Eggenburg will immerse itself in the exciting world of science in the Middle Ages. Alchemists seeking to turn lead into gold will roam the city, as will physicians seeking to cure diseases by means of examining urine and bloodletting. At the Science Slam, academics will present their latest research on the Middle Ages in a concise and engaging format.

The Highlights
The crowd-pullers of recent years will be back again this year: noble knights will compete on horseback for the favour of the audience at the jousting tournament. Groups with plenty of stamina will once again compete at Bruchenball – a mixture of wrestling and football – for the Eggenburg Bruchenball Cup. As is the case every year, one of the absolute highlights will be the fire performance on the Kanzlerwiese on Saturday evening.
