30 years of the Medieval Festival in Eggenburg

September 7-8, 2024

For a remarkable 30th time, Eggenburg will be the focal point for fans of the Middle Ages from near and far on the weekend of September 7-8, 2024. Over 200 stalls offer a wide range of goods, including medieval culinary delights. Over 250 artists, jugglers, sword fighters and musicians thrill the audience and take them back to the Middle Ages within the medieval city walls, which are two kilometres in length.

Record number of visitors in 2023
In 2023, the volunteer organisers were delighted to welcome almost 30,000 visitors. The organisers were particularly pleased that this year's festival was once again held peacefully and in the relaxed and cheerful atmosphere typical of Eggenburg.

30 years of travelling back to the Middle Ages
This return to the Middle Ages will take place for the 30th time in 2024. This makes it not just the biggest, but also the oldest still existing festival of its type in Austria. The programme is therefore a selection of the best things that have happened over the last three decades: In Bruchenball, which is a mixture of wrestling and football, powerful men and women will battle it out for the Eggenburger Bruchenball Cup. At the Science Slam, academics will present their latest research on the Middle Ages in a concise and engaging format. As is the case every year, one of the absolute highlights will be the fire show on the Kanzlerwiese on Saturday evening.

With over 200 events, there is something for everyone. Minstrels serenade their loved ones, whilst both adults and children are thoroughly entertained by the spectacle, the music, and dance. Period crafts and scientific lectures satisfy the curious, whilst acrobatics and staged fights take the breath away. Knights compete on horseback for the favour of the audience at the jousting tournament, the traditional highlight of the year.

Faun concert on the Kanzlerwiese
Organisers of the event, the Verein zur Erforschung des Mittelalters in Eggenburg, have come up with something special to start off the jubilee celebrations: The medieval band Faun is coming to give a concert in Austria for the first time in many years! This open-air concert will take place on the Kanzlerwiese on August 31st, one week before the Medieval Festival.

FAUN are one of the world’s leading bands in the fusion of old sounds with modern music, having released 11 studio CDs and 2 DVDs. Their CDs have reached top positions in the German album charts. In addition, they were also nominated three times for the Echo, the biggest music prize in Germany and achieved platinum status with their CD “Von den Elben” and gold status with their CD “Luna”.
