The eastern region is the region with the highest population growth in Austria. In order to keep up with this trend, public transport services also need to be expanded. The Vienna city railway upgrade, called S-Bahn Wien Upgrade, will comprehensively modernise and digitise routes, structures, and rail infrastructure in the ÖBB network in and around Vienna. In this way, ÖBB is creating the conditions for modern, longer trains with more seats and a more frequent service during rush hours in the future.
What does this mean for you?
To ensure that the extensive construction work can be carried out quickly and without long-term disruption to train services, the following work will take place on the ÖBB network between 28.06.2025, 02:00 am until 01.09.2025, 04:00 am
- the S-Bahn Wien core line ,
- the S7, Wien – Vienna Airport,
- the Laaer Ostbahn,
- the Southern Line, and
- the Northern Line.
Overview of planned construction measures
Why are we doing this?
For over 60 years, the so-called "S-Bahn Vienna – Core Line" between Vienna Meidling and Vienna Floridsdorf has been a vital local transport artery for residents and commuters, and the backbone of rail transport beyond the city limits.
To ensure that local and regional rail transport between Vienna and Lower Austria remains punctual and reliable in the long term, the "S-Bahn Vienna – Upgrade" programme was launched. This initiative will future-proof the line and its infrastructure by the end of 2027.
In addition to the modernisation and digitalisation of the Vienna core line, many improvements will also be implemented along the Northwest railway, Northern railway, and Southern railway lines to bring more commuters quickly and comfortably into the capital. Starting in 2026, new Cityjet double-decker trains will be used on the core line. These trains offer a modern interior design and more space for commuters and travellers with bicycles, prams, and luggage.
