Making craftsmanship more visible and carrying it into the future are the main objectives of the association of more than 30 craftspeople behind the Hand.Werk.Haus (meaning ‘craft house’). After all, they do say "we love craftsmanship. Craftsmanship creates beauty, it is regional and sustainable. Craftsmanship suits our time!"
The Hand.Werk.Haus Salzkammergut is part of the heritage-protected complex at Schloss Neuwildenstein in the heart of Bad Goisern and is just a five-minute walk from the train station.
It is open all year round and comprises a shop, exhibition rooms, the Werkraum bookbinding workshop and the "Open Space" cultural space.
In the permanent exhibition on the two upper floors, everything revolves around manual skills and craftsmanship "From head to toe", "From the necessity for beauty", "From cellar to roof" and "From hand to mouth".
Between May/June and the beginning of November, the Hand.Werk.Haus is all about the Meistersommer (or Master Summer), with temporary special exhibitions focusing on key themes. In the Capital of Culture year 2024, the special exhibition will focus on encounters and sharing of crafts, art, culture and education ranging from the regional to the international.
The annual Meisteradvent event takes place on the third weekend of advent, a first-rate and atmospheric Christmas market dedicated to crafts, where many workshops invite children to join in and have a go.
In 2016, the Hand.Werk.Haus Salzkammergut, together with the Werkraum Bregenzerwald and the Textile Center Haslach, was added to the international UNESCO register of good practice examples for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.
