Wien Hauptbahnhof

Since timetable change on 13 December 2015, Vienna Central Station and Vienna Meidling train station are assuming their full role as a national, international and regional transportation hub. From this day on, all long-distance trains operated by ÖBB will be running to Vienna Central Station and also stopping in Meidling. This means that in the future, ÖBB Railjets, ÖBB Intercity trains, Eurocity and Euronight trains on the Western Route also stop at Vienna Central Station. Bringing together the Western, Southern, Eastern and Northern Routes at Vienna Central Station and Vienna Meidling, creates a transportation hub with direct connection to all Austrian state capitals as well as Vienna Airport. For you, this means: better connections, shorter travel times and more comfortable travelling.

Salzburg - Vienna Meidling in as little as 2 hours and 15 minutes

Since timetable change, the travel time for the ÖBB Railjet from Salzburg to Vienna Meidling will be 2 hours and 15 minutes. From Salzburg, a Railjet takes you to Vienna Central Station in as little as 2 hours and 22 minutes - the same time it previously took to reach the Vienna West train station. Vienna Central Station is only 3 subway stops away from Vienna's city centre around St. Stephen's Square.

Railjet to the airport at hourly intervals

Since 13 December, ÖBB long-distance trains, i.e. ÖBB Intercity trains and Railjets, will be running to Vienna Airport e.g. from Salzburg, Linz or St. Pölten via Vienna Meidling and Vienna Central Station twice every hour. With Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz and St. Pölten, ÖBB is offering direct connections to Vienna Airport from a total of five state capitals. With the Railjet, the travel time between Linz and Vienna Airport is reduced by another 4 minutes to 1 hour and 43 minutes. Travelling to Vienna Airport is also faster from Salzburg (at little as 2 hours and 49 minutes) and Innsbruck (as little as 4 hours and 35 minutes). From Attnang-Puchheim, Vöcklabruck, Wels, St. Valentin, Amstetten and Tullnerfeld, ÖBB Intercity trains offer connections to Vienna Airport almost every hour during the daytime. All in all, ÖBB will be offering approximately 26 Railjet and 25 ÖBB Intercity connections between Salzburg and Vienna Airport.

Reaching Vienna Airport from the South with only one change of trains

Attractive travel times to Vienna Airport are also offered on the Southern Route: Passengers change trains comfortably at Vienna Central Station, quite often on the same platform, where an ÖBB Intercity or an ÖBB Railjet takes them to Vienna Airport from Mödling (in as little as 48 minutes), Baden (in as little as 55 minutes), Wiener Neustadt (in as little as 52 minutes), Graz (in as little as 3 hours and 02 minutes) and Klagenfurt (in as little as 4 hours and 18 minutes). For passengers coming from Graz, one daily direct train to Vienna Airport and back (RJ 656, RJ 755) complements the hourly offered connections. Passengers coming from Carinthia also benefit from an improved offering: every two hours, they can switch trains at Vienna Central Station, from the Railjet from Villach to the Railjet running from the West to Vienna Airport.

Faster travel to the city centre: 5 minutes to St. Stephen's Square

Vienna Central Station and Vienna Meidling offer ideal connections to local public transport. Both train stations are located immediately on one of Austria's most frequently travelled local transport routes, the S-Bahn home line, as well as on one subway line each (Vienna Central Station: U1 / Vienna Meidling: U6). In addition to this, both train stations are connected to 4 tram lines, 9 bus lines, the Wiener Lokalbahnen regional train lines (Badner Bahn), as well as numerous regional bus lines. With these excellent connections to local public transport, the transportation hub Vienna Central Station / Vienna Meidling can be reached from any subway and S-Bahn train stop in Vienna in less than 30 minutes.

Vienna West train station remains important hub for regional transport

The train station Vienna West will remain an important local and regional transportation hub for ÖBB. The rapid regional trains REX200, which are very popular among commuters, will continue to run between Amstetten and Vienna West train station. As all ÖBB long-distance trains to and from Vienna will be stopping in Vienna Meidling, the immediate surroundings of the Vienna West train station can be reached from Meidling in less than 6 minutes via the U6. For Vienna's other residential areas, the travel times to the West via Vienna Meidling will either remain the same or improve considerably with the new timetable (source: ÖIR, survey 2014).
