The third centenary of the birth of Maria Theresa is being celebrated with a grand anniversary exhibition in four locations in Vienna and Lower Austria. From 15 March to 29 November 2017 the exhibition will spotlight the life and work of this illustrious European monarch and present a nuanced and occasionally also a critical view of the bright and dark sides of her rule.
The Schloss Hof presentation has the title “Alliances and Enmities” and focuses on the difficulties of Maria Theresa’s accession to power and her foreign policy.
The neighbouring Schloss Niederweiden houses the exhibition “Modernization and Reforms”, under the banner of her many reforms and the modernization of her empire.
The Hofmobiliendepot - Imperial Furniture Collection has the title “Family and Legacy” and concentrates on Maria Theresa’s family and her dynastic marriage policy. It also deals with her strategic use of images as legitimation of her rule, her legacy, and the Maria Theresian Rococo style, taking Schönbrunn as an example.
The Imperial Carriage Museum Vienna with the title “High Office and High Spirits” explores Maria Theresa’s zest for life, her celebrations and her image cultivation between the polarities of female identity and ‘male’ sovereignty.
With the special offer of the Maria Theresa Combined Ticket you can visit all four locations between March and November.
